BOYS AND CROCHET -- Recently I asked
readers to share with me how or why they learned to crochet.
One of the most interesting
responses I received came from Darren Rankins, who wrote
me about his experience.
Says
Darren, "I started crocheting in the 6th grade
after the girls and boys in my class at Bradley Model School
here in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, agreed to learn something
different that boys usually don't do. Only 5 guys agreed
to crochet, and we loved it! I have been crocheting ever
since and have taught many people to crochet."
Hats off
to Darren and his male classmates for taking up the crochet
challenge! Just think of all the people who would
likely never have learned to crochet if Darren had taken
the stereotypical male viewpoint that crochet is "girl
stuff" and missed the opportunity to not only learn
an enjoyable craft for himself but to pass on to others as
well. And by the way, these days crochet is inherently cool,
regardless of age or gender!
In addition to being an avid crocheter, Darren is also an
accomplished writer and author of numerous volumes of inspirational
poetry and uses his talents in working
with a number of worthwhile charities.
